Rupee Symbol: New Indian Rupee Sign Design Contest Winner soon

The Government of India has decided to opt for a symbol for the Indian currency Rupee.
The currency of India, Rupee has been designated just as 'Rs.' all the years, where as the American Dollar ($), Euro (€), Pound (£) etc had their own symbols.

Department of Economic Affairs - Currency and Coinage Division had invited designs for a symbol for Indian Rupees in a circular dated 20th July 2009.
The government wanted a symbol which represents the historical & cultural ethos of the country as widely accepted across the country. The competition titled 'Symbol for Indian Rupee’ is in the final stages. Five designs has been shortlisted from the 4,000 entries and the final symbol for the Indian rupee will be announced this week.
The five shortlisted entries are are from the following

  1. Correa-Mehtorta -Harvard University-trained architect
  2. Hitesh Padamshali - JWT Advertising Agency
  3. Shahrukh J Irani - Publicis Ambience Advertising Agency
  4. D. Udaya Kumar - PhD scholar, IIT Mumbai
  5. Shibin KK - Teacher, Government Higher Secondary School at Kerala

The creator of the winning design will get a prize of Rs.2,50,000/-
